Survival Kit Series Week #6: How ya gonna cook?

I'm having SO MUCH FUN with this series.  I LOVE giving something away each week!  It has been so fun to see everyone's reactions and what you choose.  THANK YOU for participating!

If you are just joining us, I recommend starting with week #1.  You can find it here:

Once you've completed that, just jump in on this week's focus.  I will cycle through each week again once we are done.  You can do the earlier weeks last instead of first!  You can also read the intro to this series here: Survival Kit Ideas: a week by week approach.

I hope all of you were able to add snack and dinner items to your kit  last week.  I was able to find some Hickory Farms sausage for just $5!!

This week's focus:
Add what you will need to cook the food you added last week.

Be sure to leave a comment ON THIS POST by Wednesday, November 9th at 9:00 am to be entered in this week's giveaway. Just tell us what cooking supplies you have in your kit or what you will be adding this week.

If the foods you added to your 72 hour kit require any sort of preparation, you will want to be sure you have the tools necessary to make use of your food.  Much of the food I suggested did not require any prep, and it is a great goal to have most of the food in your survival kit meet this ideal.  But chances are that some of your food will require some preparation.  Next week we will talk about the tools you will need to actually eat your food.

Based on the foods I listed in the last two posts, here are a few suggestions of things you might want to consider.  I've included some links to items you can buy from Shelf Reliance.  I have not personally tried most of these items, but many have reviews.  You may be able to find some of these things for less elsewhere or you may already have these in your home.  If so, just be sure to add them to your kit.  I simply wanted to give you some ideas & options!

Scissors, knife, or other means of opening vacuum sealed pouches of food

Can opener for canned fruit, spaghettios, chili etc.

Small stove for heating water needed for Oatmeal, Hot cocoa, or soup / entrees.

Small pot to use with stove.

Another great idea from reader Marcia: Aluminum foil!  You could wrap things in foil and throw it in a fire to cook w/o needing any cookware!  Easy and cheap and light and small!  I LOVE it!

Anything Ive missed? (Next week we will talk about the tools you will need to actually eat your food)

What we have done in our family:
We have a small sewing kit, a 6-in-1 Survival shovel  and a fancy pocket knife my husband uses for backpacking (which he owned before we were married).  We currently have a wing stove in each of our two adult kits a well as a 5 Piece Mess Kit.

And don't forget....
Add $1 per person to your survival kit this week.  Make sure you use $1 bills and / or quarters.

Monthly Challenge: Fire Prevention.
This is separate from your 72 hr kit and will help you be prepared to deal with the after effects of an emergency that you do not have to evacuate for.

I hope you were all able to store at least 14 gallons of water per person in your family during the month of October.
November's challenge: Fire Prevention
  • Check all smoke alarms in your home and replace batteries as needed.  You should have at least one on every level of your home.
  • Make sure you have a gas shut off tool and know how to use it
  • Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your home and that you know how to use it. If possible, have one on every level of your home.
  • Consider adding a home fire sprinkler.  This can decrease insurance rates and increase your home's value.
  • Practice an escape plan from every room in the house. Caution everyone to stay low to the floor when escaping from fire and never to open doors that are hot. Select a location where everyone can meet after escaping the house. Get out then call for help.
  • Make sure all matches, lighters etc are kept up high out of the reach of children.
  • Review the information at the USFA on Home Fire Prevention

*Congrats to Steve* I have two of the foldable type stoves that use the canned gel fuel and lots of the gel fuel stored for emergencies. On my wish list now? The Stove in a Can! I am also SO excited to see that SR is planning to now carry the replacement fuel cells in their New products! I had researched where to find the replacement fuel cells online before with not much luck. Very happy I will be able to purchase them along with my FD food storage now from SR. :)

@Lisa: Yay for SR constantly adding new products!

@Anonymous: Nope, it is not sad at all, in fact it makes me very happy! There is not time like the present!

We have some camping pots and pans and a rack that goes over a fire then a few odds and ends from thrift shops such as an old spatula and egg beater with a crank.
:) Still stocking up water, not quite there yet!

@ Heidi, I have a bunch of similar pans. If they fit in your kit AWESOME! If not, keep them very close to your kit so you can quickly grab them if you need to. Keep up on the water! I don't think I'll EVER have all the water I'd really like to. I'm just now getting past the bare minimum. It takes time, but every little bit is something you'd be grateful for if you had to use it, right?

I just started thinking about this whole topic of emergency preparedness a few days ago, and I am thrilled to find this series! However, it seems really overwhelming (and expensive) to think about it all at once, so I love the way you have broken it down week by week. We are starting small--I bought some water and food for our kits this week and I really like the idea of the wing stove. I didn't realize there was an option that was so small!

At November 5, 2011 at 7:30 PM , Anonymous Misty said...

@ Beth: WELCOME! This can be VERY overwhelming and expensive! Just take it a bit at a time. Every little bit helps. A little bit prepared is a whole lot better than not prepared! You may not even be able to get everything I suggest each week. DON'T WORRY. I will cycle through it all again. Just do what you can. Shop around too. I always give links to Shelf Reliance products b/c I sell them. Sometimes they have the best price, other times you can find the exact same product for less elsewhere. Good luck!

We are seriously lacking in this area. Our one pot, that was in our kit, the kids have been playing with outside all summer long. We need to get some mess kits. Those wing stoves look interesting.

@ Brandon and Kristy, at least the pot wasn't a waste of money and your kids enjoyed it!

We currently have a mess kit, can opener, and a coleman camping stove in our kit.

I just started reading your blog, so am somewhat behind. But the benefit is that hubby and I do multi-day backpacking, so we have some great cooking gear already. Now I need to start looking at getting food and water squared away.

I am getting extra backpacks from my 2 oldest grandchildren - ages 7 and 11 - to use as their 72 hr kits. Then we will be heading to the $ store to fill them up. It is amazing with you can find there. The kids are very excited about taking an active part in building their kits. For "Mom and Dad", I am getting them a Stove in a Can (and one for me too).

My younger grandson - age 4 - and I began dehydrating apples, pineapple, and bananas today, He is so excited and even impressed my neighbor by explaining what a dehydrator did. Kids take so readily to food storage and being prepared.
For long term cooking, I will be getting a Sun Oven.

I have never really thought about emergency preparedness in the realm of food. I do however keep a well-stocked pantry (we live over an hour from the nearest grocery store). We experience frequent long-term power outages, so we have acquired many items to facilitate daily living. I am going to look into putting together the 72 hour kit for our family. Thanks for all the info.

@ Stacie M: You are welcome! Glad to have you join us. A few canned goods and a first aid kit is a great start!

@harlandmama: Welcome! A well stocked pantry is exactly what I focus on here. Only I call in "your own home store" (-: I look forward to hearing about what you decide to add to your kit!

@Kathleen: I've been there! We had 3 kids while my husband was in law school (expensive) and it was so hard to feel like I couldn't even get started. "Couponing" saved me! I was able to stock up on many things at the grocery store w/o increasing our food budget at all. My favorite couponing site it: www.moneysavingmom.com and you can still see my old couponing site here: www.myfrugalicious.com
And keep entering the giveaway each week. I'd love to able to help you get started for FREE!
