Shelf Reliance Harvest Food Rotation System

Shelf Reliance's Harvest Food Rotation System is one of their most popular products.  In fact, the success of the Harvest is what has allowed the company to grow and expand so quickly.

One of the early prototypes looked like this:
 and was built here:

by two college kids, Jason Budge:
 and Steve Palmer:

who each had a dream to own their own business and help others be self reliant.  They wanted to create a system that would help others avoid waste by making it easy to keep their food properly rotated.  The Harvest they created does just that: the first can you put into it is the first can to come out without any effort on your part!

The Harvest was officially launched in 2005 after months of testing.  They first tried to sell it door to door (can you imagine?  It was 6 ft tall!) without much success, but persevered.  That perseverance paid off as Harvest food rotation system sales soared in the retail market on a national stage.   This success allowed Jason and Steve to develop the Thrive food line, so that their customers would have nutritious, delicious, easy to use food to stock their shelves.

They also created numerous other free standing food rotation systems of varying sizes such as the Plenty, the Pantry, Reserve and Ready Rack, and one that fits on an existing shelf: the Cansolidator.

These food rotation systems are still some of their best selling products.  Here at Your Own Home Store, I tend to focus more on Thrive food and emergency supplies.  So I thought it was about time I taught all about the best selling food rotation system: The Harvest.

The Harvest Food Rotation System

Configurations available:
All Harvest food rotation systems are 36.5 inches wide (just over 3 ft).  But remember, you can find a food rotation system to fit in almost any space.  If you need a different width, that is what the other systems are for!  Check out the Plenty (30.5 inches), Pantry (24.5 inches), or Reserve (18.5 inches).

The Harvest is available in 2 depths:

  • 24.5" (just over 2 ft)
  • 18.5" (just over 1.5 ft)
and 4 heights:

  • 27" (2 ft 3 inches)
  • 39" (3 ft 3 inches)
  • 51" (4 ft 3 inches)
  • 72" (6 ft)

The Harvest is also one available in a system that is 78" high and can hold 5 rows of pantry cans (not available online, you must contact me directly).

In addition, the Harvest is available in an under the bed rotation system that is 10.5" high.

Can Capacity of the Harvest Food Rotation System:
90-460 regular cans, or 28-112 #10 cans depending on which size Harvest you choose!  Yes, there are Harvest's available that hold just #10 cans.  There is even one that will hold just pantry cans!

What size cans will it rotate?:
You can choose any combination of small, medium or large rows (can tracks) for your Harvest.  Small can tracks will rotate average soup cans, tuna cans, and vegetable cans, all of which generally do not exceed 4 1/2" in height or 14 oz. in weight. Medium can tracks will rotate all the cans that a small track is capable of rotating, as well as typical stew and fruit cans, and Thrive Pantry cans which can be as tall as 4 3/4" and weigh as much as 20 oz.  Large can tracks will rotate specifically #10 cans for bulk storage.

Food Rotation System Planner:
Having trouble deciding just what will work for your needs and the space you have in your home?  Try the Food Rotation System Planner!  You enter the dimensions of the space you have, and it will give you a list of all the rotation systems that would fit in that space listed from highest can capacity to smallest.

Harvest Food Rotation System Accessories:
There are many accessories available for the Harvest that make it an even better product:
Wheels so that your Harvest is easy to move once it is loaded!
Extra storage if you have some room next to your Harvest.  You can add as many as 4 per side.

Extra storage if you have room above your Harvest.  Almost all my customers add one of these!
Meant to hold six #10 cans that have been opened and partially used so your open cans have a place to be without taking up space in your kitchen cupboard.  You can add as many as 4 per Harvest 72" Also available for pantry cans.
Combine the convenience of can rotation and organization with flexibility of storing bulkier food items and emergency supplies

Replacements / Upgrades:
Already own a Harvest, but want to change it up a bit?  Need to store different size cans? No problem!  Just purchase the tracks and straps for the cans you want to store:

Don't think you have the space?
If you are serious about creating Your Own Home Store of food storage, I'm certain you can find space.  I've had food storage for years now, and I found space everywhere we've lived, including a small 700 sq ft apartment with twin newborns!  Here are a few ideas:

  • Create a table:
Since I was little I've heard people suggest that you use your food storage as a side table, end table, coffee table etc.  My question has always been: What do you do when you need to use it?  You'd have to "take apart" your table each time, right?  I mean, if you have a table built of 36 #10 cans, when you remove one, you have to either replace it with another (what if it is the can right in the middle?) or lose your table.
Shelf Reliance's food rotation systems solve this problem!  Just affix a counter top or table top that is larger than the rotation system and you have a table that also stores and rotates your food!
The Harvest 27" is about the height of my current desk, but slightly smaller depth and width wise.  Instead of using an actual desk, I could just affix a top to the Harvest 27" and rotate my food without using any additional space!  Or, you could use two of them to make a dining room table!  Or use the Harvest 39" or 51" as a work space table in your garage.

  • On the top shelf of your closet.
Often there is a lot of wasted space at the very top of our closets.  If you are in this situation and have at least 27" above the top shelf in your closet, you can fit a food rotation system there and use that wasted space to rotate your food!

  • Under hanging clothes in a closet
Do you just have shoes under your shirts in your closet?  What about putting a short Harvest there instead with a top shelf?  Then, your shoes can sit on top of the Harvest and all that wasted space can be used to rotate your food.

  • Under boxes / tubs of stored decorations, keepsakes etc.
Do you have a closet full of tubs of "stuff?"  Is there space above the "stuff" and the top of the closet?  Try putting a rotation system under all that "stuff," and use the wasted space for your food intead!

  • Under your bed
Shelf Reliance currently offers a Harvest food rotation system that will fit under your bed (you may have to raise your bed slightly) that holds regulars sized or pantry cans.  They will be releasing one on November 3rd that holds #10 cans.

So there you have it!  A really long post all about the Shelf Reliance Harvest Food Rotation System.  If you'd like one, the Harvest is currently on sale.  Any questions?

Oh, I get so tired of the "I have no space!" excuse. If I can do it in my 640 square foot home, ANYONE can do it!

By the way, for anyone reading this, and is contemplating getting the Harvest, I highly recommend getting the casters (wheels) for it even if you think you don't need it - you'll want to vacuum out/sweep underneath it once or twice a year and this makes it super easy to to do so. Plus, you never know when you might have to move it at a moment's notice.

Love all the storage ideas! I have food storage all over my home. I pulled my couch away from the wall and stored buckets behind it, stacked 2 high. Place a wide board and cover with a pretty cloth. . . instant sofa table.

My bedside table/night stand is made up of 6 cases of #10 cans stacked three side by side and covered with a large square cut from upholstery cloth. No one knows it is there but me. Now considering your idea of two of the shorter harvests topped with a table top to make a table! Cool idea :)

@Storm: 640 sq ft!?! Wow. I'd love to hear / see / highlight how you do it!

@Tightwad: Great tips about the sofa table!

@Lisa: I love it! Storage is possible if you only get creative!
