One Way to Stop Food Waste: THRIVE

Well, at least how to curb food waste!

One of the biggest benefits of using THRIVE on a regular basis is that it can help us eliminate some of our food waste.

According to the USDA, about 25% of the food in our country -- about 96 billion pounds -- gets thrown in the trash each year.  Yes, some of this is leftovers and could be avoided by simply making less of a certain dish or casserole or by actually eating our leftovers.
But, much of the waste is of foods before they've been prepared as part of a meal.  According to a USDA study of the 96 billion pounds wasted,
  • 20% of it was fresh produce.
  • 18% was fluid milk.
  • 8% was meat and poultry.
  • 9% was canned fruits and vegetables.
  • 7% was cooking fats/oils.
  • 10.5% was in the "other" category (mostly dairy)
  • 15% was grains

Does your family throw away those products?  I can bet your answer is yes!

I'm certain that you (like me) have the best of intentions.  When I buy fresh produce, I fully intend to use it.  I want to b/c it is healthy and good for my family.   But each week, I would forget about at least some of the produce.  Or, maybe I just bought a bit more than we could really eat: eyes are bigger than stomach syndrome.  Either way, much of my beautiful, "fresh" produce ended up rotten and in a bag in the trash.

I was talking to my mom yesterday and she mentioned how good the THRIVE freeze dried pineapple is.  She talked about how well it hydrated and tasted on her Hawaiian Haystacks the other night.  Then she said that one of the biggest reasons she likes it was that she doesn't have to open an entire can of pineapple for just her and my Dad.  "Every time I do that, it just goes to waste," she said.

Right.  If you spend $1 on a can of pineapple, but only use half of it, you are actually spending $2 for every can of pineapple that you actually eat.  Plus you are filling up our landfills with waste that is bad for the environment.

But if you use THRIVE pineapple like my Mom does, you only hydrate and use what you need for that actual meal.  The rest stays good in your #10 can or pantry can for a whole year, just waiting for you to hydrate and use what you need the next time you eat Hawaiian Haystacks.  Plus it tastes much more like fresh than the canned stuff anyway and is far more nutritious!  And if you have more than one can?  Well they stay fresh for 25 years unopened!

You save money, waste less food and get healthier, better tasting food!  Incredible.

The USDA's 25% number is based on all wasted food: food wasted by grocers, farmers, consumers etc.  But they also say that 15% of the food we actually bring into our homes is wasted.  THRIVE can help!  It can help you reduce waste and save money.

Here are a few THRIVE products that have helped me eliminate some waste from my home.  Each can be measured out in usable portions (love that phrase from Tawny at THRIVE hive).  I use just what I need and leave the rest in the can for next time:

THRIVE freeze dried blueberries.
I use these in muffins, smoothies and pancakes.  They don't bleed! We also snack on them right out of the can.

THRIVE freeze dried blackberries, strawberries and raspberries
These are great in smoothies, sauces and toppings.  We also eat the strawberries and raspberries right out of the can.

THRIVE bell peppers, carrots, and freeze dried celery, onions, and potatoes.
I use these in soups, stews, casseroles and salads (like chicken salad sandwiches).

THRIVE tomato powder
No more wasted Ragu, tomato paste, sauce, or juice.  I use this as a base for many soups.  I use it for spaghetti sauce.  I use it as a thickener.  This one of my very favorite products.  It also takes up much less space than all those canned tomato products!

THRIVE freeze dried sweet corn, green beans and peas
I use these in soups and casseroles, but I also use them instead of canned or frozen produce as a side at dinner.

THRIVE freeze dried cheeses
I use these on pizza, in enchiladas, in soups....everywhere I use fresh cheese.

THRIVE instant milk
We don't actually use this to reduce waste as we go through milk faster than I can keep our fridge stocked.  Instead, I actually use it to save me extra trips to the grocery store.  I just make up a gallon whenever we run out instead of running to the store.  But, many people don't drink milk like we do and can't get through it fast enough.  In fact, some people spend more per ounce on milk by buying it in 1/2 gallons or even quarts just to avoid waste.  What if you could mix up just what you needed when you needed it?  I promise, it tastes just like fresh!

How about you?  What THRIVE products have you found are helping you to reduce waste in your home?  Any other tips for reducing waste?

Best of THRIVE recipes roundup

One of my main purposes in starting this blog was to make it simple for my customers (you!) to use the products they were purchasing from me.  I don't want to just tell you that these products taste great and can save you time and money.  I want to show you that they are.
Photo Credit: Heather from Cooking with my Food Storage

Well, I am only one person and with my limited experience (and time), I could simply never show you all the different ways you could use THRIVE foods.  But lucky for us there are many incredible Shelf Reliance consultant's out there who come up with the most wonderful ideas for using THRIVE foods.  Sometimes the recipes are 100% THRIVE.  Other times, the consultants have found a way to use THRIVE in an everyday recipe.
Photo Credit: Adam & Krisi from Thrive Food Home Store
I will be starting a weekly feature here at Your Own Home Store where I highlight the best of the best uses of THRIVE that I find from other consultant's over the week.  Here are some of my favorites from this last week:

And this isn't a recipe, but it is a great example of how you can fit THRIVE food in the smallest of living spaces with a bit of creativity and organization:

I hope you all enjoy these posts as much as I did!  I would love to hear about it if you try the recipes or if you have additional tips for storing in small spaces!

THRIVE foods vs Other Food Storage Brands

Let's talk about how THRIVE compares to other long term food storage brands.  I don't want to speak negatively about any other company.  I don't believe there is any one company that comes out below THRIVE in all the following areas.  There are other good companies and choices out there.  However, I believe THRIVE comes out as the best in each of the following areas. I know that sound prejudicial since I sell the stuff. But remember, I didn't start selling it until I had done all this research and decided it was the food I wanted for my family.

Quality / Taste
THRIVE
Shelf Reliance is HACCP certified, which stands for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point.  They also have their own USDA certification number for their egg and meat products. To become USDA certified, a lengthy certification process is required which includes strict canning standards and an in-depth facility inspection conducted by an officer from the US Government. Shelf Reliance has taken this extra step because they feel it is important to take a hands-on approach when it comes to the products they sell.

Before any THRIVE products leave the facility, they are individually tested, sampled and approved by an on-site quality assurance department and FSIS Inspector. The Shelf Reliance quality assurance team carefully reviews each product to verify that it meets standards of premium quality.  They take great precaution in every step of the process to ensure you’re eating only the best.  The large majority of THRIVE foods contain no preservatives, additives, and are gmo, msg and gluten free.

They are also relentless in finding the best food sources in the country, and go to great lengths to test multiple sources until they find the best foods available. They won’t sell a product unless they feel it is superior.

One evidence of the quality of THRIVE is Be Ready Inc.'s decision to carry it almost exclusively in their stores.  They have been selling and using other food storage brands for 20+ years, but have decided that the quality of THRIVE is so incredible as to warrant phasing out all other brands.

Other Companies
Most other food storage companies do not package their own foods. This is done by others and the product is simply re-labeled.  Some companies also combine various individual ingredients of other companies and package them in ready to eat entrees.  Many companies have very little control over the quality of the food they are selling you.

I have many, many customers who have purchased from various other companies for years.  When they try THRIVE, they are so amazed at the quality in taste that they started purchasing THRIVE instead of other company's products.  THRIVE food really is delicious.

Use / Rotataton
THRIVE
All THRIVE products are available as individual ingredients in separate cans.  This means they are easy to use and rotate in your own existing recipes.  It makes it possible to "eat what you store and store what you eat."  THRIVE also employs professional chefs to cook with THRIVE and develop mouthwatering recipes.  You can find many of them on the Shelf Reliance YouTube channel.  You can also find them in the new THRIVE cookbook.  I also cook with THRIVE regularly and you can find my recipes here at Your Own Home Store.

Shelf Reliance also offers their patented food rotation systems that make it even easier to properly rotate and use your food.

Other Companies
Some long term food storage companies sell mostly pre-made entrees.  While these would be great to use in an emergency (and THRIVE does sell a few entrees), they aren't what we want to eat everyday.  You can't use entire entrees as part of your existing recipes. This makes rotating this food very difficult, and often it just goes to waste if not used by its expiration date.

Many other companies only offer certain products as part of a package: breakfast packs, starter packs, etc. This makes it difficult to customize your food to fit your family's needs b/c you can't purchase them separately if you want to. (Again, THRIVE does offer a pre-made packages, but you can also create your own package with the Planner).

However, the two above statements are not true of all other companies: there are many other long term food storage companies who, like THRIVE, sell products in individual ingredients in separate cans, but there are no other companies selling Shelf Reliance's food rotation systems.

Customer Service / Support
THRIVE
Shelf Reliance has an incredibly helpful and friendly customer service department (an 800#).  At times they are under a lot of stress due to the high demands of these products, yet not once have a heard a less than friendly voice on the line when I've called.
However, in addition to their customer service department, Shelf Reliance has thousands of independent consultants (like me!) making it easy for their customers to get individual, personalized service and help when they need it.  Consultants are called consultants for a reason: I want you to contact me with any and all questions you may have. That is one of the biggest reasons I started this blog: to help all of you use and enjoy the products you were purchasing from me.

Other Companies
Correct me if I am wrong, but I only know of one other long term food storage company who sells their products through independent consultants. If you have questions about most company's products, you are left to calling a 800 # or "googling" it.

Cost

Be careful when comparing cost.  Not everyone puts the same amount of food in their #10 cans.  I've found the best way to compare for most products is to figure out how many 1/4 cup servings are in a can and compare by price per 1/4 cup serving.   I've created the chart below based on this idea (I got the idea to do this from Hilary over at THRIVE Hive).

But there are a few things that are better compared another way.  For example, I compare milk by the number of gallons you get from one #10 can and I compare eggs by the number of large eggs you get from one #10 can (THRIVE has 236 medium eggs in one can or about 177 large eggs).  So, in my chart below, all comparisons are by 1/4 cup serving unless otherwise noted.

Another thing to remember about cost is that you can earn THRIVE for free by hosting a cooking demonstration.  You can do this in your home, by phone, video or completely online!  You can also get THRIVE for free by selling it.  Those two opportunities are not available through most other food storage companies.

Packaging
THRIVE
All THRIVE foods come in #10 cans, pantry cans or pouches.  The cans are double lined to prevent rust from the outside or the "tin-like" taste on the inside.  They are already appropriately packaged for long term storage.  No need to get your own cans and oxygen absorbers and package the food yourself.  No need to worry about if you did it right.  Shelf Reliance's on-site quality assurance department and FSIS inspector have already done it for you!
All THRIVE cans are also color coded based on the food pyramid, and there is a delicious recipe on the back of every can.

Other Companies
A few other companies allow you to buy some products in bulk (large 50 lb bags etc), but you then have to find a way to package these products for long term storage yourself.  This creates an additional expense and takes additional time.  Some companies line their cans on the outside, but as I am writing this article, I personally know of no other company that also lines them on the inside.

Based on the above research, I decided about a year ago that THRIVE was the food I wanted to purchase for my family.  I have not regretted that decision one bit.

THRIVE Strawberry Sweet Rolls

These strawberry sweet rolls were great, but I think I overcooked them just a bit.  I got the recipe (and converted it to THRIVE) from My McDonald Meal  I made them the night before and we warmed them up for breakfast the next day.  I enjoy having something a bit different (and really tasty) for breakfast every now & then.

Glaze

Mix water, THRIVE instant milk, THRIVE butter powder, and sugar in large pot.  Allow to come to a boil and then quickly remove from heat to avoid scalding.  Cool for 20 minutes and add yeast.  Add 3 1/2 cups flour 3/4 -1 cup at a time.  Dough should be sticky.  Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour.

Stir in last 1/2 cup flour,  baking powder, baking soda, salt, brown sugar and cinnamon.  Knead dough on lightly floured surface for one minute.  Pinch off small pieces (about golf ball size), flatten and add small amount of hydrated strawberries to center.  Fold roll over strawberries and pinch together.  Place in a greased 8 or 9 in round cake pan and repeat until pan is full.  Let rise for another 30 minutes

Preheat over to 375.  Bake for 20 minutes or until golden.

Let cool, then mix glaze ingredients by adding just enough water to get a slightly runny consistency.  Poor over rolls (I took the pictures before I made the glaze..oops)

Freeze Dried Fruits: Save some money!

Here is a very common scenario I get at my parties:

Guest: I buy freeze dried strawberries from ___________ (Costco or Nutsonline or Walmart or Harris Teeter or Trader Joes or Whole Foods Market) and my kids love them!
Me:  Yes, freeze dried fruits are becoming more and more mainstream b/c they are so healthy and so easy to snack on.
Guest:  Yes, but they are so expensive!
Me:  What do you pay?
Guest:  Oh, about $6-10 for just a couple ounces
Me: Would you like to pay just over $24 for an entire #10 can (12 cups)?
Guest: Uh, yeah!

Many, many people have started using freeze dried fruits in some form.  Gerber sells them for babies.  Costco sells them in the snack isle by the fruit snacks in little single serving pkgs.  You can find them at health food stores.  More and more people truly are seeing the benefits of freeze dried fruits.

Buying them in #10 cans (or cases) through Shelf Reliance is a very inexpensive way to get them.  Want to know a few other benefits of purchasing them this way?
  • Shelf Life: The #10 cans of THRIVE freeze dried produce have a sealed shelf life of 25 years!  I doubt the pouches you purchase elsewhere will last you that long!
  • Quality:  Before any THRIVE products leave the facility, they are individually tested by our on-site quality assurance department and FSIS Inspector. The Shelf Reliance quality assurance team carefully reviews each product to verify that it meets their standards of premium quality.

THRIVE Flavored sugars

I'm always trying to come up with more ideas for using the powder at the bottom of the cans of  my THRIVE freeze dried fruit.  I have to say, I think this one is my favorite idea yet.  My kids had fun helping me make these flavored sugars.  Here is how to make them:
  • Take the powder (it will likely have a few chunks mixed in) from the bottom of a can of THRIVE freeze dried fruit and place it in a sealed food storage bag (try a quart sized Ziploc, the sandwich size was too thin and we actually pounded holes in it...oops).
  • Pound it with a wooden spoon until it is 100% powder: as fine as sugar.
  • Mix it with granulated sugar or powdered sugar or even raw sugar

Here are some ideas for uses (I have not yet tried all of these, but I will and as I do I will post about them):

  • Sprinkle on cereal
  • Sprinkle on buttered toast
  • Use it to flavor a hot tea
  • Use in baked goods to make them uniquely flavorful and colorful
  • Sprinkle on top of muffins and other baked good before baking (like these banana muffins)
  • Add to vinegar for a flavorful salad dressing
  • Rim a cold drink / smoothie with them (especially if you mix them with raw sugar instead of granulated)
  • Use the flavored powdered sugar to make colorful, flavorful frosting (I need to try this by adding some butter powder and water....hmmmm)
  • Homemade pixy sticks! (see comment below from Nann Dalton)
Use you imagination!  I would love to hear your ideas (leave a comment)!

Here is what cute Hanna did while we worked on the sugars and muffins:

THRIVE Banana Muffins

YUM
is what I have to say about these muffins.

I am in love. Breakfast for days. Yum.

My kids wanted to make cupcakes.  I wanted something a bit healthier.  I was hoping these banana muffins would be sweet enough to please all of us.  I was not disappointed.  Neither were my kids.  You can find the original recipe over at Taste of Home, and see how I tweaked it to use THRIVE below (I also doubled the recipe.  I got 24 muffins total):

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350
  • Add enough water to banana slices to just barely cover them.  Let sit for 5-10 minutes.  Blend well in blender.
  • Combine flour, baking soda and salt in bowl.
  • In a small bowl, mix butter powder, brown sugar, egg powder and water.  Mix well.  Add vanilla and creamed bananas.
  • Add flour mixture to creamed mixture until just moistened. Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Fill lined muffin cups three-fourths full with batter.
  • Sprinkle banana sugar mixture over each muffin (I will post recipe tomorrow).
  • Bake at 350° for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

THRIVE Whole Eggs: 10 reasons I love them

I have been using whole powdered eggs for a few years now.  I love them.  When I mention that to people, they almost always turn up their noses and say, "really?"  I answer, Oh, yes, really!  They are truly fantastic.  Here are 10 reasons why:

  1. They save me money. THRIVE Whole eggs are about $1.10 / dozen.  Eggs at my local grocery stores are far more than that.  In fact, if I see them on sale for $1.50 / dozen, I'm excited.
  2. They save me time.  No more running to the store (or my neighbors) to pick up eggs in the middle of making cookies or brownies.  Oh, wait this saves money too = no more impulse buys!
  3. They work wonders in baking. I"m not sure if it is b/c the measurement is more exact, but I've found my baked goods tend to turn out better when I use the THRIVE whole eggs.
  4. They are less messy No more sticky hands from cracking eggs.  Need I say more?
  5. No risk of salmonella.  Cookie dough anyone?  Thick chocolate shakes?
  6. They last forever!  They have an amazing 5 year sealed shelf life and a 6 month opened shelf life.  Did you ever think you could actually store eggs for more than 4-6 weeks?
  7. No refrigeration needed.  Store them in those pretty little glass containers on your cupboard with the rest of your dry goods.
  8. They taste great.  Like I mentioned, I've been using powdered eggs for a few years.  What I did not mention, is that I just started using THRIVE eggs a few months ago.  While I used other brands in my baking, I never liked them in my omelets, casseroles or frittatas; but I do like the THRIVE eggs
  9. They save storage space.  You can store 236 eggs (almost 20 dozen) in just one #10 can!
  10. You can get them for FREE when you host a partyCan you say that about your fresh eggs?
If you are interested, you can purchase THRIVE Whole Eggs on my Shelf Reliance website.

The THRIVE Q: Simplified

The Q is netflix for food.
Seriously!
  • Instead of creating a list of movies you'd like to watch eventually, you create a list of all the THRIVE foods you'd like to have in your home store and set a budget.
  • Instead of movies being shipped to you, THRIVE foods from your list that fit within your budget automatically show up on your doorstep each month.
  • Instead of adjusting the order of the movies that come, you can adjust the order that your THRIVE food gets shipped to you.  You can choose to get blueberries before carrots!
It is seriously that easy.

Benefits of the Q
So, what are the benefits of purchasing your THRIVE foods on the Q?

  • All the benefits of the bronze membership plus:

    THRIVE Pizza Quick Bread

Man how I wish I had some serious photography skills.  I'm going to need to take a class or two (or ten).  My pictures just are not doing this food justice!

I got the basis for this recipe from Jenny over at Picky Palate again.  I've been following her blog for a few years and love her stuff.   You will need to go check out her pictures.  Much better than mine.

    • 1/4 cup THRIVE Tomato Powder
    • 1/2 cup water
    • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning (or a mixture of parsley, basil, oregano, garlic powder, celery seed etc)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray small bread pan with non-stick spray.

Place all dry ingredients from the first list in a bowl and mix to combine.  Add water and mix until just combined.  Pour half of batter into prepared bread pan.

Mix Tomato Powder, water and Italian seasoning and spread evenly over bread batter. Pour the remaining batter over sauce.

Bake for 45-55 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean from center.  Let it cool /settle for 30 minutes before taking it out of the pan.  Slice and serve!

    THRIVE cans are double enamel-coated

Did you know that the cans THRIVE foods come in are double enamel-coated, inside and out?

There are two reasons for this:

    To prevent rust.

Metal rusts.  It does.  You can do your best to prevent it (keep it off the floor, keep cans in original boxes, rotate it properly), but these cans have an added measure of protection that makes me feel more at ease with my investment.  And did you know that if your can rusts, it will rust all the way through to the food?  The double enamel coating on THRIVE cans will prevent rust unless chipped.

    To preserve taste
Have you ever eaten an old can of food (like green beans or corn?) and had it taste like tin?  The double enamel coating on THRIVE cans prevents the tin taste of the can from leaking into the food.

    THRIVE Corn Muffins

When I first got married, I wasn't a huge fan of cornbread.  Luckily, my husband loves it so I started making it more and more often.  As I've experimented with different recipes, I've really come to like it.  This recipe is awesome, especially when you slather on some sweet butter and honey.

I ground my own cornmeal from popcorn using my wheat grinder, but you can use THRIVE cornmeal instead.

Preheat oven to 375.  Mix all ingredients into a medium bowl.  Transfer batter into a greased 8x8 in pan (or muffin cups...fill 3/4 full) and bake for 15-20 minutes.

**Note: recipe does not have to be made with all THRIVE products, but it can be.  For example, I did not use THRIVE salt or sugar.  I actually don't even own THRIVE salt, sugar or baking soda yet.  I will have to let you know if they are superior in any way once I've got them!  Anyone out there tried them and want to share their opinion?**

Shelf Reliance Shipping Increase: Save by ordering NOW!

I just wanted to let you know about a change that will be taking place at Shelf Reliance on June 8th (next Wednesday).  The shipping charges for orders over $190 will be increasing.

    • Shipping for all orders $190 and under will stay exactly the same.
    • Shipping for orders between $190-$400 will be $19.99
    • Shipping for all orders over $400 will be 5% of the order total.
This is something that Shelf Reliance has to do due to their own rising shipping costs.  Many other companies are being forced to take similar action.  Still, I know rising costs hit everyone hard, including my customers (you!), so I'd like to offer a few thoughts:
    • Luckily the smaller orders are not increasing at all so this won't affect all of you.
    • You do still get a discount on shipping by making a large order.  The lowered tiered shipping rates are between 6%-10%.  It is even more if you order less than $70 (shipping is $6.99 even if you only order $10 in product).  So 5% is still below those rates.
    • They did not switch to shipping by weight or size, which is great.  Can you imagine what it would cost to ship a few cases of wheat or a large food rotation system or water barrel? This is actually how they did shipping back in 2009!
    • They are still subsidizing a portion of their shipping costs.  It costs them significantly more than 5% on average to ship items to you, so you will still not be paying the full shipping cost.
    • They are still very competitive with other direct selling companies.  Most of these companies do not subsidize their shipping costs.  Many are around 10%-12%.
Shipping for orders over $190 will stay a flat $15.99 (incredible!) until June 8th (next Wednesday) so if you have been contemplating placing a large order, I would recommend you do it before then to save on shipping.

Here are a few of the more popular higher priced items / packages that I've seen people buy over the last few months:
**You will save an additional 2%-4% off these prices if you have a Q.  If you'd like, you can create a Q.  Contact me with questions!**

If you have any questions about this new shipping policy, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Pay $10, get $20 certificate to Old Navy

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with Shelf Reliance or THRIVE foods, but I wanted to share it anyway.

I've mentioned a few times that I am a "couponer:" I shop with coupons.  In fact, I rarely shop without them.  You can see my old website here: Frugalicious

So, I will occasionally share great deals that I find.  Just the really great deals.  Hopefully, this will help you build a "home store" of other things as well.  *haha*

Today's great deal is at Groupon.  If you are unfamiliar with Groupon, they are an incredible company.  I can fully recommend them without any reservation.  I have purchased from them many, many times and been completely satisfied.  In fact, they once gave me two Groupons when I'd only paid for one.  When I brought this to their attention, they apologized and gave me both for free!  Unheard of!

So this is how it works:  Companies offer really great deals through Groupon (today's deal is from Old Navy).  The catch is that a certain number of people have to purchase the deal within a 24 - 72 hr period for it to be "valid."  If not enough people buy the deal, no one is charged and no one gets the deal.  However, if enough people do buy in, then every get the deal (hence the name "groupon" instead of group coupon).  Today's deal has already "tipped," (meaning enough people have bought in) so if you buy it you are sure to get it.

They offer deals that are good in multiple locations (like this Old Navy deal) and deals that are good only in specific cities (so check your city).  I have used Groupons at restaurants, for kayaking, family photos, hotels, groceries etc.  They really are awesome!

Today's multiple location deal is for Old Navy.  You will pay $10 and get a $20 Groupon that you can use at Old Navy (like a gift card) until July 30th, 2011.  You must purchase the Groupon by 10:00 pm tomorrow (Thursday, June 2nd).  Go get it and build your "home store" of clothes!  *he he*
